GRAND LEDGE - The GL volleyball team traveled to Battle Creek Central on Tuesday night to begin district play. The squad faced a tough Jackson team for the third time in three weeks.
The Comets relied on consistent play from team members, quality serving and very few mistakes to beat the Jackson Vikings in the first set 25-15. GL continued to play well winning the second game 25-21.
Jackson refused to quit and played tough in the third set, but the Comets finished strong winning game three 26-24 for the match ending the Vikings season.
The Comets will face the Holt Rams in Thursday night's semi-final action at Battle Creek. In their last meeting, Grand Ledge beat the Rams at Holt and secured a first place tie in the final standings of the CAAC Blue Division. In other action, the Varsity Team traveled to Eastern last Thursday for the CAAC Blue Tournament. The Comets defeated Everett 25-12, 25-22, and 25-17 in the first match of the day.
The second match pitted GL against the Vikings of Jackson. Grand Ledge defeated Jackson in four sets 25-15, 19-25, 25-22, and 26-24. This advanced the Comets to the semi-final match against League Co-Champ Okemos.
The Comets came out strong and appeared ready to avenge their early season loss to Okemos during league play. Grand Ledge won the first set 25-21.
The teams switched to different sides of the net and this proved unlucky for the Comets as they lost a close second set 25-27.
Grand Ledge was able to return to their "lucky" court and they again beat the Chieftains 25-22 to take the third set. The fourth set put the Comets on the other side of the net and they again lost a close game 22-25. After the coin toss for game five, the tie-breaker, the Comets had to stay on their current court which again proved the unlucky side of the net.
